THE LEARNING CENTER ON TZOLKIN COSMOLOGY

Welcome to the learning center on the Art and Science of a Social Physics(ASSP) and the Art and Science of Synchronicity (ARTSOS) as based on the Arguellen Account (AA) of the Mesoamerican Tzolkin cycle   The Tzolkin cycle calendar is the core component of the entire Maya-Meso-American Calendrical (MMAC) System.

The Arguellen Account represents the first stage attempt to universalize and further elucidate the mechanics of the enigmatic tzolkin cycle calendar. ARTSOS and ASSP represent the second stage attempt to do the same and my work goes a step further by being the first to offer empirical evidence for its existence. ARTSOS describes the cosmological mechanics underlying synchronicity, our day to day unfolding reality and human social dynamics.

My experience tracking and learning the Tzolkin Cycle-Code has taught me that what most of us experience as synchronicity are only the most obvious of synchronicities and are a mere fraction of the countless synchronicities that are taking place all around us every moment of the day.

This page is known as tone cycle master page (TCMP) and it is the most concise and comprehensive aggregation of Tzolkin cosmology to be found in print or on the web. It contains all of the core principles and visual elements that constitute Tzolkin Cosmology. Linked to the TCMP are all of the articles I have written in support of my treatise on Tzolkin cosmology.

This page houses the current Tzolkin tone cycle and condenses all of the key precepts involved with Tzolkin Cosmology. The information contained further down will help you understand the images and terms found on the above themeplex images.

The Themeplex

The first part of this page contains what are known as the 13 Themeplexes of the current tone cycle and they are all found in the section above the learning center. A tone cycle is a 13 day period. . A themeplex is composed of dates, an image and its description. The descriptions refer to the qualities embodied by each symbol in the image. According to Tzolkin cosmology each day is characterized by a specific set of qualities

The themeplex image is composed of 5 color coded symbols and a number. The number is at the very top of the image and it is shown in its traditional Maya dot-bar notation form.  The 5 symbols are modernized versions of the traditional Maya glyphs used by them to encode information about a given day’s qualities. Each symbol was selected because it epitomizes certain archetypal qualities. For example the Dog is used to convey the qualities of love and loyalty.  The verbiage above the image contains the Gregorian calendar date and the corresponding AA-Tzolkin date. AA refers to the Arguellen Account of the traditional Maya tzolkin. This is so it is not confused with other versions of the Tzolkin.

The AA-Tzolkin date will be a number from 1 to 260 and it denotes the day number in the 260 day sequence.   Next you will find a number from 1 to 13, a color and the name of the day’s foremost or central archetype. The number refers to the tone number within the 13 day tone cycle. Each day also has its color association. It will be either red, white, blue or yellow. And the sequence will always follow the same color order listed.  The archetype is known traditionally as the kin of the day. Kin means day as well as person in the Mayan language. I use the terms kin, theme and archetype interchangeably. Below the name of the day you will find the name and description of the day’s tone.  More information on the tone is found further down.

The verbiage below the themeplex image goes on to name and list the role-function and attributes of each of the 5 archetypes found in the themeplex image. The descriptions are color coded so that there is no confusion about which attributes go with which symbol.  You will also see that each description is headed by a unique term known as the role-function. The role-function will be either as the guide, the central, the antipodal, the analog or the quasi. More information on the role-functions further down.

The last themeplex item is known as the oracle of the day.   When the 6 key attributes of the central archetype and tone are combined a poem of sorts emerges. Each day of the AA-Tzolkin has its oracle  They were fashioned by Jose Arguelles when he presented his more universalized version of the Mesoamerican tzolkin in his Dreamspell publication of 1991.

The oracle of the day provides us with a concise summary of the day’s foremost thematics. Aside from including the attributes of the tone and kin of the day it also includes the day’s guiding archetype.  The rest of the information contained on this page gives a brief description of each component component thus far introduced and yet to be introduced.  Links to more in depth information are provided.

The terminology of tzolkin cosmology will be unintelligible and overwhelming to the uninitiated. In order to acclimate people to the arcane world of MMAC I have prepared over 30 articles in my attempt to provide context, preliminary empirical evidence, and the theoretical framework behind Tzolkin cosmology.

THE FOUNDATION OF HOLISTIC COSMOLOGY?

THE TZOLKIN CYCLE AS COSMOCYCLE

The Tzolkin Cycle as Cosmocycle suggests that the Tzolkin cycle-code is a charting of the most fundamental properties and processes of the Cosmos as seen with the unaided eye. Cosmos is Greek for universe and order. Cycle can mean either round, rotation, pattern, rhythm, sequence and succession set. Cosmocycle means the order of the cosmos as demonstrated by a self-existing and self-repeating sequence (process) of patterns, properties and rhythms.

The Cosmos: The universe seen as a well-ordered whole; from the Greek word kosmos ‘order, ornament, world, or universe’, so called by Pythagoras and his disciples from their view of its perfect order and arrangement.

Cosmology or the study of the order of the universe is akin to a worldview. A cosmology being only more expansive in scope. A physical cosmology as defined by the sciences seeks to understand and explain the laws, origin, composition, functions, interactions and developmental dynamics of the universe.

A mythosophical cosmology as used within the context of religion, spirituality, myth and philosophy, seeks to understand and explain the laws, origin, composition, functions, interactions and developmental dynamics of the human socio-cultural universe within the context of the physical universe.

A holistic cosmology would be a fusion of physical and mythosophical cosmologies. I propose the Tzolkin-Cosmocycle as the foundation of a universally valid holistic cosmology.

The daily Themeplex consists of 5 archetypes and the tone. Each archetype plays a specific role in day’s events. The information contained herein will help you make sense of the themeplex codes. The learning center should function as your home base for tracking and learning Tzolkin cosmology, ASSP and ARTSOS.

HOW TO READ THE TZOLKIN CHART

TABLE OF THE 20 ARCHETYPES

The tables contains the 20 archetypes of the Tzolkin cycle-code their names, symbols, meanings and some of the key words associated with each archetype according to the three main accounts. The traditional Aztec and Maya versions along with the modern Arguellen Account (AA). The 20 archetypes represent the Tzolkin’s 20 day cycle.

You will note the changes made by Jose Arguelles to the traditional archetypes and how the two traditional models differed amongst themselves. You will also see an ARTSOS column to show where my accounting has reverted certain names to their traditional version.

An archetype is an elemental entity. My use of the archetypal concept gives a much deeper meaning to the word archetype than do Jungian psychological models. The Jungian model starts with the human domain while Tzolkin cosmology points to what is perhaps the most fundamental strata of the cosmos.

An archetypal entity per Tzolkin cosmology is an irreducible set of qualities seen to manifest at every scale of the energy matter spectrum…think SPIRAL. The symbol assigned to each archetype is thought to best represent the attributes of the archetype in question. The symbol chosen is not the archetype itself, but rather an epitomized embodiment of particular qualities at the human scale of unaided perception.

GREGORIAN TO AA TZOLKIN DATE CONVERTER

AA Tzolkin refers to the Arguellen Account of the Tzolkin cycle. It is also known as the Dreamspell version. My work is based entirely on the AA Tzolkin and I am the only Maya calendrical researcher to offer empirical validation of the Tzolkin cycle.

Empirical verification of one Tzolkin count invalidates the other so called true or traditional Tzolkin counts in use by other groups. The information contained herein and on the emergent culture site will help you determine authenticity of the AA Tzolkin. I will soon release empirical methodologies that will require nothing more than a set of 20 birthdays of those closest to you to verify the astounding predictive precision of Tzolkin Cosmology. Use the date converter to decode the foremost portion of your Universal Personality Complex according to the archetypal thematics charted by the Tzolkin/Cosmocycle code. When you input your birth date the calculator will tell you the corresponding Tzolkin cycle date.

Your birthday archetype tells you what your most defining and foremost character traits are, but it is only one layer of your Universal Personality Complex. Knowledge of it will now allow you to explore the many dimensions and applications of the Art and Science of a Social Physics (ASSP) and the Art and Science of Synchronicity (ARTSOS).

The 7 most pertinent articles to the goal of learning more about the meaning and application of Tzolkin-Cosmo Cycle knowledge are listed further down and should be considered the core of your condensed study guide on ASSP and ARTSOS.

Your Archetypal Signature is your

Personal Gateway into the Cosmocycle

Upon decoding yourself you will find that there are three parts to your foremost archetypal signature. The color, a tone and the archetype itself. The color of your archetype assigns you to a color family.

In essence you most represent the qualities of say the red family if your archetype is designated as red. Study the attributes of your color family to gain insight into the color family attributes you most embody.

Then study the attributes of your analog (supportive, like minded) color family to find out the other set of traits you most embody in a more background sort of way. If you belong to the Red Family then White is your Analog Color Family and vice versa. If you belong to the Blue family then Yellow is your analog color family and vice versa.

Next study the family of attributes that most challenge you (the antipodal), which in the case of our red family example would be the blue family and vice versa. The antipodal color family of White would be the yellow family and vice versa.

The last color relationship is known as the quasi. Quasi means sometimes supportive and sometimes challenging and as result the power of the unexpected is emphasized by the Quasi relationship . Red has a quasi relationship with yellow and white has a quasi relationship with Blue and vice versa for both sets.

Special Note: The calculator generates Arguellen nomenclature for the tones and archetypes. I have made mention that I have reverted three Arguellen name changes back to the original Maya name in my rendition of MMAC. I have also renamed 3 of the tones. Please see the tables for a side by side listing of Arguellen, ARTSOS, Maya and Aztec names for the 20 archetypes and the 13 tones. You are free to use the archetypal version that most resonates with you.

 

Tools to help you track the Tzolkin cycle

There are some slight differences in nomenclature between ARTSOS and the apps I’ve listed here.  The differences are minor and they shouldn’t prevent you from learning Tzolkin cosmology. By familiarizing yourself with the content on this page you will know what the differences are and why. Some apps and most writers over-define and over-generalize key aspects of Tzolkin cosmology… such as the attributes of the tones and archetypes. I suggest that you ignore their descriptions and stick with the 3 key descriptors for each aspect found on this page. This is a very important detail.  I hope to soon introduce ARTSOS based apps.

There are some slight difference in verbiage between the standard AA-Tzolkin that you will find elsewhere and my rendition of Tzolkin cosmology. THE ANALOG COLOR RELATIONSHIP

ANALOG: Refers to synergistic, complimentary, like minded and generally supportive interactions.

Red and White are analogs.

Blue and Yellow are analogs

 

PERFECT ANALOG PARTNERS

“Perfect” analog relationships between the Kin are determined by a numerical relationship. Fundamentally the color code determines what is generally to be regarded as an analog relationship, but a numerical relationship exists to determine a “two sides of the same coin” understanding to the analog relationships between perfect analog partnered Kin.

THE ANTIPODAL COLOR RELATIONSHIP

ANTIPODE: Refers to oppositional, antagonistic, polar, frictional, unlike or
generally challenging interactions.

Red and Blue are antipodes.

White and Yellow are antipodes.

 

PERFECT ANTIPODAL PARTNERS

“Perfect” Antipodal relationships between the Kin are also determined by a numerical relationship. In essence the color code determines what is generally to be regarded as an antipodal relationship. A Kin’s perfect antipode partner is 10 Kin away in the sequence of twenty. In our example using the NIGHT Kin 3, the antipode is Kin 13 the SKYWALKER and vice versa.

THE QUASI COLOR RELATIONSHIP

QUASI: Refers to relationships that alternate
between antipodal and analogous states

At times they are generally challenging and at other times generally supportive.
The element of the unexpected is highly emphasized by the Quasi relationship.

Red and Yellow are Quasi.

White and Blue are Quasi.

PERFECT QUASI PARTNER

“Perfect” quasi partners are also determined by a numerical relationship. In essence the color code determines what is generally to be regarded as a quasi relationship, but there exists a numerical relationship that determines the most mutually attractive quasi relationship possible between the various Kin. The Kin exhibiting optimal quasi characteristics add up to 21. The NIGHT’s perfect Quasi partner is th MIRROR. The MIRROR is Kin 18 and the NIGHT is Kin 3.

THE TONE CYCLE NUMBERS AND NAMES

Each tone is characterized by distinct properties that are described on the Themeplex image in the verbiage directly under the tone number and archetype. The tone’s number on the Themeplex image and on the Tzolkin chart are denoted by the dots and/or bars of the Maya notation system. Please see the legend below on the Maya notation system. Refer to anyone of the Themeplex images to see what I mean.

Each day has a Tone number and Tone name associated with it. The Ancient Meso-Americans identified what modern Neo-Mayanist calendrical followers call a Tone with a number one through thirteen. In the Arguellen Account (AA) the Tones where given names and attributes.

My initial and current articulation of the Maya-Meso American Calendric system (MMAC) is slanted more toward the technical and so I tend to use terms that define the Tzolkin in operational terms. In many cases Arguelles shrouded what was an already arcane knowledge system with obscure and vague terms. Terms that the mainstream intelligentsia might associate with new age mumbo jumbo.

One of my goals is to make MMAC accessible to a wider audience and so I tend to use terms with a more mainstream or universal appeal. Several of the Arguellen Tone names are good examples of what I mean by vague or shrouded terms. The tone tables show the Arguellen Tone names, their attributes and my recommended substitutions for 3 of the 13 names.

You are free to use the tone name you prefer or identify with the most.I have made it known that I believe that a committee or association of calendrical researchers and students have the opportunity to weigh in on MMAC nomenclature among other aspects. That association may begin to take form with the launch of my @Cosmocycle Twitter account.

THE GUIDE OF THE DAY

GUIDE: Refers to the Kin imparting the attribute of guidance or leading tendencies of the day.

The Guide is determined by a numerical formula.

The guide is always the same color as the Kin of the day.

The tone of the day determines the exact Kin guide

 

DETERMINING THE GUIDE

1st, 6th and 11th tones determine a guide that is the same as the Kin of the day–as in our example 1-Serpent. The guide of a 1-Serpent day is the Serpent

The 2nd, 7th and 12th tones determine a guide of the same color counting two same color positions in reverse sequence. If our example were a 2-serpent then it would be guided by Kin 17 the Red Earth.

3rd, 8th and 13th tones determine a guide of the same color counting forward in the sequence by one same color position. If our example were a 3-Serpent then the Kin guide would be a Red Moon. Red Moon is Kin 9 in the sequence of 20 and the serpent is Kin 5

4th and 9th Tones determine a guide of the same color counting in reverse sequence by one same color position. If our example were a 4-Serpent then the Kin guide would be an Alligator. Alligator is Kin 1 in the sequence of 20.

5th and 10th tones determine a guide of the same color counting forward in the Kin sequence by two same color positions. If our example were a 5-Serpent then the Kin guide would be a Skywalker. Skywalker is Kin 13 in the sequence of 20.

 

 

THE ARCHETYPAL NUMBER FAMILIES

The explication on the number families is too lengthy to interject here, so I have included only a brief introduction, images of the number family groups and a link to the complete article on the number families. The next sphere of Tzolkin Dynamics, the archetypal number families, interrelates the 20 archetypes via a numerical pattern that emerges using the Maya dot-bar numbering system.

As it turns out the Maya dot-bar numbering system correlates those archetypes that are most thematically resonant. Thematic resonance in turn reveals nested interrelationships. By understanding the nested relationship among the archetypes a whole new sphere of connectivity emerges.

HYPER – DAY Phenomena

Fifty two of the Tzolkin’s 260 days have special designations as Hyper-Days (HD) Hyper-days are noted on the Tzolkin Chart as either blackened or greened squares. Hyper-Days are characterized by you guessed it… hyper-activity. There is an overall sense and actualization of intensification for all types of activity from human/animal behavior to natural phenomena.

The following terms are apt descriptors of hyper-day events, effects and moods.

Tzolkin Cycle Hyper-Days are correlated with spikes in the frequency and intensity of…

  • Earthquakes
  • Volcanism
  • Solar Activity
  • Extreme Weather
  • Extreme or Unusual Human Activity
  • other extreme events e.g. animal attacks, explosions and other natural phenomena.

Such events happen all the time, but my studies have revealed that certain Tzolkin cycle days are more prone to concur with the phenomena listed for some yet unexplained reason. I have three ongoing scientific studies that show a very strong correlation between Tzolkin Cycle Hyper-Days and increases in the frequency and intensity of seismic, volcanic and solar activity. ONGOING EMPIRICAL STUDIES

In addition to the articles I have three ongoing studies that track the Tzolkin Cycle’s Hyper-Days (marked in green on the chart below) and their relation to spikes in the frequency and intensity of seismic, volcanic and solar activity. All three studies show a strong correlation between Hyper-Days and increased activity of the kinds mentioned.

    • Anticipating Personal and Collective Shifts in Relation to MMAC Time Science

      The word shift is commonly used in reference to the motifs associated with the 2012-“End of the Mayan Calendar” phenomena (2012-MC). The expectations of those most realistically attuned to the mytho-symbolic significances of 2012-MC sense that there are large scale socio-cultural shifts in the works. Emergent-Culture.com is essentially dedicated to the planet wide socio-cultural movement (planetary culture) that I believe lies at the heart of the “co-incidence” between the end of the 5125 year Maya Long Count Cycle and the unprecedented levels of socio-economic turbulence seen all around the world.

      The notion of mere “coincidence” is dispelled once one understands what the Ancient Mesoamericans (Maya, Toltecs, Olmecs, etc) discovered about the nature of time and reality. I use the the term Ancient Mesoamericans because precolumbian Mesoamerica was home to upwards of 80 different tribes and most followed the same calendrical system. Additionally the Maya were not the first to use the core of the Mesoamerican calendrical system—-the tzolkin cycle. Although they were the ones who developed Mesoamerican calendrics to its highest degree. I also prefer to use Ancient Mesoamericans because it helps differentiate between present day Mesoamericans and those who lived in Middle America prior to the European invasion.

      Since it was the ancient ones who were responsible for the development of Maya-Meso-American Calendrical system. (MMAC)  

      And What is Time?

      In the Western world time is a very muddled concept. Western science is only now beginning to acknowledge that their classical conception of time is ill defined, overcomplicated and just plain wrong. Have a look at Wikipedia’s treatment of time to get a taste of what I mean. Time has been so misunderstood that Western scholars have written entire books about the subject without reaching any kind of conclusion or consensus about what time is.

      Those of you familiar with my writings on time and Mesoamerican calendrics (calendar/time science) know that from my vantage point, time is nothing more than movement and that’s how the Ancient MesoAmericans (AMA) saw it as well. Albeit a special kind of movement.Something I call ordered movement. There are various definitions of time and many are useful, but I’m talking about time in the most fundamental of terms. Time is not the fourth dimension as Einstein believed.[…]

      [NOTE: The foregoing paragraphs serve as an introduction to a chapter on my developing book on The Legend of 2012. The remaining text below this note is the tail end of the chapter where I show how one may apply MMAC time science to one’s life in order to anticipate significant personal life events, and as a way to self validate what I consider to be the most profound and universally relevant cosmology (worldview) presently available. It is universally relevant because it applies to everyone regardless of whether one believes in it or not. It is universally relevant because it’s a mesocosmically scaled cosmology and that means that you don’t need to understand equations or use special tools to observe and appreciate, e,g. microscope, telescope.

      The chapter goes on to develop the idea of time as ordered movement/change and of how the earth’s basic movements translate into the scheduled and sequential movements of all organisms. The mechanism is detailed down to the DNA molecular level in an attempt to show how all of life unfolds to the beat of some cosmic piper. The piper’s “musical score” is intrinsic to the earth’s movements, the workings of DNA code and all human activity in general. I suggest that the Ancient Mesoamericans discerned the cosmic score from their study of astronomical and earthly cycles both overt and subtle. Some cycles are so subtle that no other culture discovered them. The most subtle of these cycles were encoded into their Tzolkin cycle calendar.

      I also relate the tzolkin and genetic codes and then show their relationship to the implicate and explicate orders that the Physicist David Bohm describes in his Holomovement cosmology. This article focuses on a particular type of movement we call a shift or transition. These shifts happen at predictable time scales because the growth and development of all organisms happen according to timing constants built into the very fabric of our reality.
